This is probably one of the most emotionally charged questions in Reiki and does come up a lot.
Over the years, I’ve had Christians contact me privately asking whether Reiki is spiritually dangerous, anti-Christian, connected to spirit guides, or somehow incompatible with their faith.
Honestly, I understand why people are confused. If I was coming into Reiki for the first time now, I’d probably walk away from it. Quite some distance away.
If you look online, you’ll find Reiki mixed with angels, ascended masters, channelling, spirit guides, psychic reading, tarot cards, crystals and every other bit of spiritual flotsam and jetsam imaginable. At that point, it’s no wonder many Christians look at it and think, What the hell has this got to do with healing? or ‘These people are nuts!’
So I’ve addressed all of this in my latest Knowledge Centre article, which you can read here:
One of the stories I share in the article is about a retired German Catholic priest I taught while living in Egypt. He completed Reiki Levels 1, 2 and 3 with me and later said:
“What you’ve taught me is exactly the same as what I was taught during my own training as a priest.”
Those are his exact words.
Obviously, his assessment of the training doesn’t ‘prove’ anything theological, but because it highlights something important: traditional Reiki and modern New Age adaptations are not the same thing.
The article also explores:
why Reiki became tangled up with New Age beliefs
the difference between traditional Reiki and modern Reiki-derived systems
why Reiki symbols are meditation devices, not magical objects
what the Catholic Church has actually said about Reiki
why some Christians feel Reiki deepened their prayer life rather than pulling them away from it
I also share the story of a student in Cairo who became disappointed when she discovered we wouldn’t be connecting with guardian angels or ascended masters in class because, frankly, none of that has anything to do with traditional Reiki.
If you’ve ever struggled with this topic yourself, or know someone who has, go and read the article.

“Your classes are life changing and very enlightening. It’s kind of impossible to miss on something like that for real. I love how we discuss everything or anything that pops up into our heads! Love the open discussion, all the positivity and love.”
All the best,
