The Confidence Myth – Why Waiting to Feel Ready is Holding You Back

What if confidence—not skill—is what’s holding you back?

Steve Gooch at the sphinx in Egypt

In 2016, I was living in Egypt, out of a job, and spiraling into panic mode.

I had bills to pay, kids to support, and no income. For three months, I applied for jobs non-stop—and got nowhere.

With every rejection, my confidence took another hit. I started questioning my skills, my worth, my future. I felt completely stuck.

Then one day, I had a realisation:

"Why am I waiting for someone to give me an opportunity when I already have the skills to create my own?"

I had been teaching and coaching for years. I knew Reiki, meditation, and business coaching inside and out.

So, I stopped applying. I started teaching Reiki and meditation classes instead.

For three months, I watched my bank account shrink until I had only one month’s worth of money left.

Then suddenly, everything changed.

My classes took off.

Within three months, I had doubled my previous salary while working half the hours. I went on to become the top Reiki teacher in Egypt.

But here’s the thing: I could have done this so much sooner if I had just believed in myself.

And I see so many women stuck in this same place—wanting to start a business, take on leadership roles, or raise their prices, but holding back because they don’t feel “ready.”

They wait for the next qualification, the next sign, the next piece of validation—instead of backing themselves now.

👉 Success isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about believing you can figure it out.

If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, this is your wake-up call.

News – The Confidence Myth in the Workplace

A recent article from SympaWeb highlights how confidence—not skill—often determines who gets ahead in business.

Women tend to underestimate their abilities, while men apply for opportunities with only 50-60% of the qualifications.
Lack of self-confidence is one of the biggest barriers to career advancement.
The workplace rewards confidence over competence—so waiting to feel “ready” actually holds women back. •

💡 Takeaway? The more you back yourself, the more others will. It’s time to stop waiting and start leading.
